Interracial Dating

Last week a thread about interracial dating cropped up on EMO. For upperclasswomen this may have been a trite topic which rears its head annually. For others, this may have been a chance to express ideas on an issue that has some sort of relevance in their lives. Nonetheless, the thread demanded enough attention so that the topic of interracial dating had become centripetal to Sunday's meeting.

While no solid conclusions we drawn about interracial dating, marriage, and families, the discussion offered a chance for Ethos women to hear a number of perspectives, including, but not limited to that of biracial women, women who feel slighted by the occurrence of such relationships, and women who believe that love is something beyond one's control, and hence, racial preference. Questions such as 'what is race' 'what is culture' and 'does one imply the other?' were rasied as Ethos women were quite generous with their opinions about the matter.

The topic is undeniably common within the Black community, and as an organization for women of African descent, it's no surprise that many Ethos women prefer images of a Black family to that of a mixed or biracial one. Images like that of the Obamas...

  1. It's funny, reading posts like this make me wish I still had access to EMO and firstclass in general as the conversations were always so engrossing.

The absurdity of the last statement is that you can't point to the first family and label them your typical "Black family" if the father is just as much white as he is black. He would be just as much in an interracial relationship if married to a white woman as he is married to Michelle.
I'm not dismissing how important this is to some people, but therein lies the flawed thinking regarding race, color and culture. It is but an image.
